I am a native of Bogota, Colombia. I studied Economics at Universidad Javeriana in Bogota, Colombia, and then transferred to Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, Kentucky where I graduated with a bachelor in Textiles and Clothing Merchandising. I later moved to Charlotte, NC where I worked in the retail industry and then as a Spanish teacher. I currently work as an independent Spanish Interpreter.
My passion for dance since childhood along with my knowledge of business and textiles has helped me in my role as one of the founders of The Carolinas Latin Dance Company. In 2001 a group of children with Latino heritage, both of my daughters included, requested help with the creation of a dance group, with the interest to learn various dances from their own counties and also from their friends' countries of origin. The Carolinas Latin Dance Company (CLDC) was created as a non-profit organization. I started as the Administrator of the Dance Company and became Executive Director in 2006.
I am fascinated with learning about other cultures and to see the children's desire to learn to dance the Folkloric music of countries different from their own country of origin, the parents' desire to pass on their heritage to their children and their commitment to have them be part of CLDC, lastly, the dedication of the teachers are the reasons that carry me through the extensive work that is required for the success of this community recognized organization.
Also, observing the personal development benefit of the children is the best reward I could have asked for in being part of CLDC. To see how they are able to learn essential life skills in a fun way yet at the same time learn to understand what diversity is and how to accept cultural differences is beautiful. It helps them become citizens of today's expanding global society. At the same time, it is fascinating to see how CLDC serves as a cultural bridge between parents, children and the community.
I am very proud that CLDC which started "just for fun", is to date a 15 year old company that still continues to help parents and their children and also contributes to cultural enrichment of the Charlotte community.
My hobbies are dancing, painting, exercising, sewing, socializing, doing crafts, helping others and learning. I enjoy having a challenge in front of me and I feel complete once I accomplish that goal.
